Description
Derinkuyu is the largest underground city discovered in the Nevşehir province of Turkey to date. This vast underground city is a surreal experience to visit. The discovery of this place was quite a surprise. On finding a mystery door behind the newly built home the local man never thought of it as the beginning of excavating into a centuries-old realm of unending marvels beneath the ground. It was the rebirth of a city that held about 20,000 lives in the past with complete advancements. This ancient city is nothing less than the contemporary cities in the world.
Things to see in Derinkuyu
- The deepest underground city
Derinkuyu is 85 meters deep with more than 15,000 ventilation ducts to provide fresh air for the inhabitants.
- Explore the infinite number of cave rooms
March through hundreds of cave rooms connecting to each labyrinth tunnel.
- Discover each level
The city is known to have more than 18 subterranean levels. As you descend, you see animal barns, churches, family rooms, graves, and even a missionary school built between the terrains. The family rooms to which the tunnels connect were used for even work, worship, and meetings.

January 20, 2023 at 11:33 AMAs a person who loves exploring and delving into history, I recommend visiting the place. You will not just know the history of Turkey but also a part of our world history. You cannot help but be amazed by the architectural wonder and your imagination will go wild at how the people during those times were able to do their activities of daily living. You will see beauty in the complexity of the place.

January 20, 2023 at 11:39 AMThis is one of the best places I have ever visited. This structure is prehistoric and is a result of man’s ingenuity. The city was built underground to protect the people from invaders. Its underground structure and the maze-like caves are simply stunning. It can be a bit claustrophobic in certain sections. It can extremely difficult for people with restricted mobility. We did it as a part of the green tour. Highly recommended on your visit to Cappadocia!

January 20, 2023 at 11:43 AMThe least touristy of the underground cities and the most rustic. This truly gives you the feel of how these places were inhabited. The other two cities have been highly renovated for tourism. Amazing experience and well worth the visit. Don’t skip this while in Cappadocia!

January 20, 2023 at 11:44 AMWow. Just wow. This place is a must if you visit Cappadocia. About 40 mins drive away it has plenty of parking, lots of restaurants around it, and is easy to find. Free with a museum card. Allow at least 2 hours and take a torch. Explore the caves up to 8 floors deep. You’ll want to have strong knees and be happy with enclosed spaces. You’ll spend a fair bit of time bent over, but there are plenty of places to stand up straight too.

January 20, 2023 at 11:45 AMAn amazing new experience. Well maintained :). Maybe everyone who wants to go here, need some exercise because of the narrow paths to get into lowest level of the city. It needs some effort to get down and back to upper level.

February 16, 2023 at 11:12 PMThe Derinkuyu Underground City was absolutely intriguing to me. Only eight of this landmark’s at least 12 floors are accessible to the public. They carved ruts to drain wine into huge vats, shafts to keep fresh air in, areas for families, larger rooms with food and water troughs to house animals, and still larger cross-shaped church areas to gather for prayer.

February 16, 2023 at 11:29 PMThis underground city is the biggest one that has opened to tourist attractions. I definitely suggest a tour guide for underground cities because without the history you see nothing but plain walls. People are from small/closed places be careful! We visited kaymakl iti and akcakonak underground cities without a tour guide.

February 17, 2023 at 12:09 AMThe underground city is like nothing else! It was very interesting to learn why the underground city was built and how the people lived there. However a tour guided is very much needed as there is no information regarding what each room was used for and the directions about which way to go can be confusing.

February 17, 2023 at 12:19 AMAt first, I was suspicious about getting a tour guide as it didn’t seem legitimate, he approached me as I was already in the underground cave. However, it was needed. You can bargain a little on the tour price too.

March 29, 2023 at 11:02 PMThe tunnels can be narrow and low in some areas, so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to duck. The underground city can be quite crowded at peak times, so it’s best to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
